Catnip or Cat Nip

Your Cat relies on you for its health, happiness and well-being. One of the most important decisions  you can make for your cat or kitten is provide it with safe, quality food, treats, toys and products. A good healthy foundation can help your cat live a healthier, longer life with less visits to the vet.

What is catnip?

cat·nip  [kat-nip]

Catnip is a plant, Nepeta cataria, from the mint family, having egg-shaped leaves containing aromatic oils that are a cat attractant.

Most cats enjoy catnip and some are not interested in it a all!

Wikipedia states that " Nepeta is a genus of about 250 species of flowering plants in the family Lamiaceae.

The members of this group are known as catnip or catmint because of their effect on cats —nepeta pleasantly stimulates cats' pheromonic receptors, typically resulting in temporary euphoria.

Wikipedia further states that, "Catnip and catmints are mainly known for the behavioral effects they have on cats, particularly domestics.

When cats sense the bruised leaves or stems of catnip, they may roll over it, paw at it, chew it, lick it, leap about and purr, or heavily salivate.

Some will growl, meow, scratch, or might even bite the hand holding it.

Dried catnip is also available to cat parents and is often used in cat toys, sprinkled on cat scratching posts or just sprinkled on the ground for cats to play in and enjoy.

It is believed that the catnip response lasts only about 2 to 3 minutes before kitty gets bored and moves on to something else more interesting to them.

Apparently for some kitties catnip may have some negative side effects as well.

Eating too much can cause a few cats to be overtly aggressive, typically making them hiss.

Most often that is not the case and catnip is a fun treat for cats.

Watch an Interesting You Tube Video about Catnip.

(It appears that much  this particular "You Tube" video may have been recorded observing feral cats so some cats don't look as healthy as most domestic cats.  But, we believe the video delivers a fairly accurate representation of how many cats respond when exposed to fresh catnip.  Note:  Viewing this video reminded me to remind you to always spay or neuter your cat and to donate to your local cat shelters and  spay and neuter clinics.)
